Dietary Management of Struvite Stones in Cats


The following recipes are designed to maintain a low pH, necessary for the prevention of struvite stones in cats. Note: To calculate the caloric requirements for an average adult cat, figure on 70-80 kilocalories per kilogram of body weight or 30 kilocalories per pound of body weight and adjust the quantities accordingly.

Sardine Recipe

3-1/3 ounce raw tofu
2-1/4 ounces sardines, canned in tomato sauce
1/2 yolk of egg, large, hard-boiled
1/2 ounce clams, canned, chopped in juice
1/3 cup brown rice, long grain, cooked
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/2 ounce brewer's yeast
1 bonemeal tablet
1/2 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet

Provides 501 kilocalories, 37.4 grams protein, 29.5 grams fat

Tuna Recipe

3-1/3 ounce raw tofu
2 ounces tuna, canned in water, without added salt
1/2 yolk of egg, large, hard-boiled
1/2 ounce clams, canned, chopped in juice
1/3 cup brown rice, long grain, cooked
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/2 ounce brewer's yeast
2 bonemeal tablets
1/2 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet

Provides 446 kilocalories, 39.7 grams protein, 23 grams fat

Salmon Recipe

3-1/3 ounce raw tofu
2 ounces salmon, canned with bone
1/2 yolk of egg, large, hard-boiled
1/2 ounce clams, canned, chopped in juice
1/3 cup brown rice, long grain, cooked
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/2 ounce brewer's yeast
1 bonemeal tablet
1/2 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet

Provides 482 kilocalories, 39.7 grams protein, 26.5 grams fat

Chicken Recipe

3-1/3 ounce raw tofu
2-2/3 ounces chicken breast (raw weight), cooked
1/2 yolk of egg, large, hard-boiled
1/2 ounce clams, canned, chopped in juice
1/3 cup brown rice, long grain, cooked
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/2 ounce brewer's yeast
2 bonemeal tablets
1/2 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet

Provides 469 kilocalories, 42.6 grams protein, 23.6 grams fat

Beef Recipe

3-1/3 ounce raw tofu
4 ounces lean ground beef (raw weight), cooked
1/2 yolk of egg, large, hard-boiled
1/2 ounce clams, canned, chopped in juice
1/3 cup brown rice, long grain, cooked
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/2 ounce brewer's yeast
2 bonemeal tablets
1/2 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet

Provides 494 kilocalories, 46.7 grams protein, 24.1 grams fat

Lamb Recipe

3-1/3 ounce raw tofu
4 ounces lean ground lamb (raw weight), cooked
1/2 yolk of egg, large, hard-boiled
1/2 ounce clams, canned, chopped in juice
1/3 cup brown rice, long grain, cooked
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/2 ounce brewer's yeast
2 bonemeal tablets
1/2 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet

Provides 522 kilocalories, 46.5 grams protein, 27.4 grams fat

Clam Recipe

3/4 cup raw tofu
1/2 yolk of egg, large, hard-boiled
1 ounce clams, canned, chopped in juice
1/3 cup brown rice, long grain, cooked
2 teaspoons canola oil

1 bonemeal tablet
1/2 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet
